Do you remember when it first hit you that you were an adult?
Not long after my husband and I had graduated from college and gotten married, I was struck with the realization that we were now officially adults. I think it was the fact that we finally had our own place. Our home wasn’t a fancy house, but just a small apartment. It didn’t take long to clean, and my husband was content with the handful of recipes I recycled each week.
I was excited to know that we had arrived, but I was afraid that I would do things wrong. I was adulting, and adulting felt like a lot of responsibility!
As time went on and life got more complicated, I realized that being an adult was sometimes harder than I originally thought it would be, and when it came to doing the whole grownup thing well, I had a lot to learn.
Today we’re beginning a 5-day series in which we will be sharing one tip each day that will lead you to a healthier and happier life! The ideas we will be sharing have come from my own personal experiences and from those I have learned from along the way.
The inspiration for my first tip is my mother.
Today’s tip:
Never stop learning!
Many people, unknowingly, develop the philosophy that once they finish school, they have learned all they need to know, and they can stop learning.
Of course, after you graduate is the BEST time to learn. All those years in the classroom taught you HOW to learn. When school in a formal classroom setting is complete, you are given the opportunity to experiment with new things and improve in all the areas that matter most to you!
No one knows this better than my sweet, dear mother. My mom got married straight out of high school. While she did not get a 4-year college diploma right out of high school, but it did not stop her from learning what she wanted to learn when she wanted to learn it. She took classes here and there when it made sense for the season of life she was in and what she was trying to accomplish at that particular time. Her eagerness to learn and her willingness to keep growing always felt like an invitation for you to ask questions in her company and not feel silly for asking. She is refreshingly optimistic and a joy to be around. Though she is not rich by the world’s standards, she still manages to be one of the happiest people I know. If you know her personally, you know this to be true.

When it comes to learning, the possibilities are endless and the rewards are many. Lifelong learning is the secret to success in both your career and personal life. So today, we are going to talk about some of the benefits of lifelong learning, and then we will give you a very practical tool that you can implement TODAY that will help you get moving in the right direction!
5 important benefits to continuing to learn new things:
1. Fight back Alzheimer’s Disease!
Did you know that older people who continue learning and keep their minds active are much less likely to suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and other illnesses. It’s true. Studies show that the more you use your brain, the better it is at remembering things. By giving your brain regular workouts, you’ll keep it healthy and better able to fight off Alzheimer’s. As we get older, it’s a game of use-it or lose-it, so let’s keep looking for opportunities to use it!
2. Sets a great example for others.
As you continue to better yourself, you will be an inspiration to your children, grandchildren, and friends! When the people who are close to you watch you grow and become a better version of yourself, it encourages them to think that they aren’t “stuck” in life, and that is a precious gift to give someone! Your example can give others hope and courage where they once had discouragement and depression. Who knows who you will inspire as you learn fresh ideas that you can share with those you love?
3. Learning keeps you healthy.
You may overlook how much learning contributes to a healthy lifestyle, but it absolutely does. For example, learning something about nutrition will help you make better choices with your diet and take better care of your body. Learning a new sport or game will get you more active. Learning about time management habits can reduce stress, decreasing the likelihood of stress-related illnesses in your future.
4. Learning enhances your social life.
People with strong social connections tend to be happier and live longer. When you think about it, learning sparks social engagement. We often connect with others because we want to learn from them and with them. Our willingness to learn not only betters ourselves, but also those around us as we share what we are learning. Your learning efforts, in other words, support the greater good of the community you live in.
5. There is joy and satisfaction in learning new things.
One of the most important benefits of continued learning is the simple fulfillment you get when you learn something new. Human beings are born curious and eager to know and understand things. When we study something that interests us, it enriches our lives, and we are opened up to new perspectives, and that can be very refreshing!
When you open your mind, you will open your world!
So, what are you waiting for? Are you ready to open your mind to some new methods, ideas, and hobbies?
