Each year we make a big deal about our kid’s birthday parties. Sometimes we pay to have parties at special places and sometimes we come up with parties at home. These past couple of years, as our kids are getting older, they are requesting that we do parties at home more. Once we decide on our theme I usually enjoy coming up with fun foods to eat and fun games to play, as it gives me an excuse to get creative. I find that by going to Dollar Tree for the plates, plastic ware, and balloons, etc. we can really cut back on costs and with pinterest we are never short on ideas.
This year my son turned nine years old and he decided he wanted a Lego movie sleepover. I decided I would share just a few of the pictures of what we did and share a couple of links to where I found my favorite resources in case if anyone else wants to throw a Lego party of their own.
SNACK PLATE
One of my favorite ideas that I found was a snack plate that spelled LEGO. We used cucumbers, cantaloupe, strawberries, and cheddar cheese with blueberries to make ours but you really could use lots of different fruits, vegetables, cheeses, etc. to make this one your own. I set this out on the table at the beginning of the party and allowed the kids to come and grab the snacks during the night as they wanted to. This seemed to work well.
ACTIVITY BALLOON POP
Another idea I found that I liked was to put slips of paper in balloons and a write a time on the outside of the balloon with a permanent marker. If the balloon said 5:00 then at 5:00 one of the kids would pop the balloon and they would do whatever the slip of paper told them to do. I changed ours up a little since I didn’t know how long each game or activity would take. Instead of writing times on the balloons I decided to just number the balloons in the order I wanted to do each thing, starting with eating dinner and ending with watching the Lego movie to calm them down at the end of the night. The kids seemed really excited to find out what the next balloon would tell them to do.
Here are what our balloons said to do:
1. Taco Tuesday (we made walking tacos)
2. Where are my Pants game
3. Master builder competition
4. Eat cake and ice cream
5. Open presents.
6. Free time (one of the boys bought Preston a Lego video game so some of the boys played that during their free time while others chose to play with the legos or play on the air hockey table in our basement)
7. Watch the Lego movie with popcorn
TACO TUESDAY
One of the first things we did was feed the kids dinner. Because the movie refers to Taco Tuesday we decided to make walking tacos. “Walking tacos” are made when you put whatever you would normally eat on a taco into a bag of crunched up chips instead of a taco shell. (we allowed the kids to choose from fritos, tortilla chips, or dortitos). I set out all the other ingredients (we used sour cream, salsa, tomatoes, lettuce, avocado, shredded cheese, corn and taco meat) and I let the kids tell me what to put in their bag after they crushed up the chips in their bag.
(my walking taco…sorry the picture is so dark)
MASTER BUILDER COMPETITION
We had a master builder competition. We gave the boys each their own bin of legos to try to build the tallest tower and we set the time for two minutes. I got this game idea here. Mason (in the green shirt below) was our winner. After the tallest building competition we gave all the boys five minutes to work together and see how tall of a tower they could make if they worked together.
“WHERE ARE MY PANTS?” GAME
The boys’ favorite game was the “Where Are My Pants?” game. My husband hid a pair of lego pants that were sitting on a lego horse. I read a letter from the “Where are my pants” guy and the kids had to use the hints to try to find his pants. Here is the letter we made up:
“Please help me find my pants. I got up this morning and took a shower in the bathroom. I went to the kitchen and made a pot of coffee. I heard a weird noise downstairs so I went down to see what it was. It was just the dryer. While I was downstairs I decided to play on the air hockey table. I looked over and saw my horse and decided to ride on my horse a little while. As I was riding I heard the doorbell ring so I came upstairs. Now I don’t know where my pants are. Please help.”
The “horse” with the “pants” on it were on the air hockey table. The boys were very proud of themselves when they found the pants after running around the house looking for them.
“CAKE”
My son does not like cake so we usually get an ice cream cake but this year he requested that we get him an Edwards hershey’s creme pie instead of cake.
I got the hershey’s pie, some whipped topping and some blue gel to decorate the cake. I spread whipped topping over the top of the pie to make a nice white top of the cake that I could write “Happy birthday” on with the food gel. I wish I took a picture of it, but I wasn’t thinking about it. (the box is pictured above and a picture of Preston blowing out the candles is below)
PRINTABLE RESOURCES
Toward the end of the night we had the boys get out their sleeping bags, get into their pajamas, gave them some popcorn and popped in the Lego movie. I found this fun idea to put popcorn in so I printed these off and made them. I did not take a picture of them (also didn’t think of it) but here is the link if you want to make your own.
I also found a great lego printable that you can print onto colored paper and tape to the outside of juice boxes so I made those too. I liked that those were so easy to do. Here is a link to the juice box lego printables.
We found these invitations that you can personalize and make your own. My husband helped me make some that were very similar.

There are so many great ideas and resources for a Lego party out there. One of the sites with several ideas I did not mention, but liked, was at the Baker Lady blog.
There were some great game ideas here.
If any of you have a Lego Party idea and want to share it, just comment on this post, or you can put a link to your site in the comments if you like.
